THE COMMITTEE IN PARIS FOR THE THIRD BIE ASSEMBLY

The Rome Expo 2030 Promoting Committee attended this morning its third Assembly of the BIE (Bureau International des Expositions). The meeting was dedicated to the illustration of the themes chosen by the different candidates. The event was attended by the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Antonio Tajani, who for the first time since taking office has expressed the Government’s strong commitment to support the Italian candidacy.

The candidacy dossier, an exhaustive 618-page work detailing the impact that Expo Roma will have on the Country System, was officially handed over to the BIE on the 7th of September by the delegation led by the President of the Promoting Committee, Ambassador Giampiero Massolo.

Rebecca Bianchi, Étoile of the Teatro dell’Opera di Roma, opened the Italian presentation today, before the BIE delegates and the other three competing delegations (Busan, Riyadh, Odessa). The Étoile highlighted Rome’s role as the Capital of all cultures and all types of art, including dance. Then the emotional video narrating Rome’s candidacy for Expo 2030 was presented. The soundtrack of the video is the music written by the famous Italian composer Ennio Morricone for Once Upon a Time in the West, one of his masterpieces known all over the world. In the room was also present the very young protagonist of the spot, Gaia (Elisa Pasquini), a representative of the entire generation that will come of age in 2030.

Matteo Gatto, Director of the BID FILE, illustrated the chosen theme, supported by a video contribution with an introductory rendering of the project masterplan by the studio of the architect Carlo Ratti. The Assembly was then concluded by the Mayor of Rome, Roberto Gualtieri.

Further remote speeches in support of the candidacy were made by the Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani, today attending the NATO interministerial summit focusing on the war in Ukraine, and Susana Malcorra, former Foreign Minister of Argentina and former Head of Cabinet of the UN Secretary General.

Present in the room for the delegation of the Roma Expo Committee were the President Ambassador Giampiero Massolo, the Director General Giuseppe Scognamiglio, the Director General of Fondazione Expo Roma Lamberto Mancini, the Central Director for the integrated promotion of the Italian language and culture of MAECI Giuseppe Pastorelli, the Director of the Roma Expo Campaign, Ambassador Sebastiano Cardi, and the Head of MAECI’s Roma Expo Task Force, Elisabetta Martini.

Today’s Assembly is the third of five moments set by the BIE in which the Committee is called upon to present Rome and justify its candidature. The final vote will take place in exactly one year’s time. The Committee’s special thanks go to the Morricone family and the Superintendent of the Rome Opera House, to Francesco Giambrone and the Director of the Costanzi Ballet Company, Eleonora Abbagnato, and finally to the Director of the Museum of Civilisations in Rome, Andrea Viliani.
